Abbas Shamseddine: Advancing Beekeeping into a Sustainable Livelihood

Abbas Shamseddine, from Zawtar El Charkieh in South Lebanon, has long been connected to the land through beekeeping—a craft passed down from his father. While he had the foundational knowledge, turning this inherited practice into a stable and profitable activity remained a challenge.
Seeking to strengthen his work, Abbas joined a specialized beekeeping training supported by the Association for the Development of Rural Capacities (ADR) in the framework of the “Economic Strengthening and Social Stability of Vulnerable and Displaced Communities in South Lebanon” project. This opportunity allowed him to deepen his understanding of modern beekeeping techniques, improve hive management, and enhance the quality and diversity of his products

.

With these new skills, Abbas began approaching beekeeping more strategically. He optimized production, reduced losses, and made better use of by-products such as honey and wax. This shift enabled him to increase his productivity and generate a more consistent income.
Today, beekeeping is no longer just a traditional activity for Abbas—it is a structured livelihood that supports his household and offers potential for further growth. By combining inherited knowledge with new expertise, he is building a more secure future while contributing to the sustainability of local agricultural practices.
Abbas’s story highlights how investing in skills and innovation can unlock the economic potential of traditional sectors like beekeeping.
